Tech Support Pop-Up Scams
A pop-up window warns that your computer has a virus and tells you to call a phone number right away.
How the scam works
A pop-up appears while browsing, often with a loud warning sound, claiming your computer is infected.
It displays a phone number and tells you to call immediately for support.
The person who answers asks for remote access to your computer and then asks for payment to “fix” a problem that does not exist.
Common warning signs
- The pop-up cannot be closed easily or fills the entire screen.
- It uses urgent language and sometimes a loud alarm sound.
- You are asked to call a phone number shown on the pop-up itself.
- The caller asks to remotely access or control your computer.
What to do
- Close the browser window or restart your computer rather than calling the number.
- If you are not sure how to close it, ask a family member or Senior Signal for help.
- Do not allow anyone to remotely access your computer because of a pop-up warning.
What not to do
- Do not call phone numbers shown in pop-up warnings.
- Do not allow remote access to your computer based on a pop-up.
- Do not pay for tech support services offered through a pop-up.
Example message
Never call a phone number contained in a suspicious message. Instead, use the official phone number printed on your card, statement, or the organization's official website.
When to contact Senior Signal
If you see a pop-up like this, contact Senior Signal before calling any number it displays.
